All Aboard Florida Train Unveiled
« on: October 19, 2012, 11:38:42 PM »
Tonight we got our first look at the new ALL ABOARD FLORIDA trains, here's the scoop!

OCK

Quote
From their September presentation of All Aboard Florida.

Mentions that the Downtown Miami station will be elevated as in Berlin, and connect with two metrorail stations.

Ft Lauderdale will conect with Wave streetcar, and in WPB they are in talks with Tri-rail and Amtrak.

Rolling stock is the biggest holdup, it will take 20-30 months to build. There will be ten train sets

South Florida stations will be open to use by the commuter rail project.

The two potential rolling stock companies are foreign with US plants

Some portions might have a third track

They look more in line with the design by Pullman Standard for the Amtrak Superliners.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Superliner_(railcar)

Since this is owned by Bombadier now, I would say Bombadier is going to source them.

http://www.bombardier.com/en/transportation/

The only other choice would be a clone of the Amtrak Surfliners by Alstom.

http://www.alstom.com/transport/

However, Amtrak has an inventory of unused and damaged Superliners at the Beech Grove, Indiana shops that could be rehabbed or repaired to spec. This would get AAF to market based on their publicized timelines and would be cheaper too.

Nippon Sharyo http://www.nipponsharyousa.com/ just opened a new bi-level commuter rail assembly center in Rochelle, IL, but these cars are really for the 60 mile or less market.

They just won the Chicago Metra and VRE contracts for bi-level gallery cars.

There are currently two builders bidding on these trains, because of the short timeline, we expect the winner to be announced shortly.

Looks great!  Seems like they're still on pace for 2014.

Forgive me for jumping into this play during intermission, but is All Aboard Florida a retake on the HSR Florida plan?  Or is this a possible Jacksonville - Miami plan?  Or just South Florida.  You know, this is like the third or fourth different named rail plan I've heard about in the last year for Florida ... why don't these different groups get together and actually start moving people across the state?

Florida's HSR project is dead.  However, FEC believes they can build a similar project between Miami and Orlando and make money off of it.  If successful, they plan to expand it to Jacksonville and Tampa, which basically follows the path of the deceased HSR proposal.

Out of all the proposals over the years, I think this one is actually going to happen.

We have done two feature articles on All Aboard Florida. Our first article offers the 'official line' from the original announcement and the second, our railroad pundit view of the system.

http://www.metrojacksonville.com/article/2012-mar-feci-bringing-private-passenger-rail-to-florida-by-2014

http://www.metrojacksonville.com/article/2012-apr-stunning-things-are-happening-as-florida-goes-rail/page/2

Florida High Speed Rail as we came to know it is dead, it was a bad plan with little chance of success, no matter how success was measured. The official state passenger rail plan is as bad as the HSR plan was, it even laid out a route from Orlando to LAKE CITY via Ocala and Gainesville and missing Jacksonville completely. That plan will likely never get off of the paper its drawn on. This leaves us with Amtrak, who has been "announcing" trains coming to the Florida East Coast for at least 20 years. They did run a test train on the line a few years ago, then decided they needed to start over in their planning setting the target launch date back to eternity.

More regionally, there is the Southeast Florida Rail Corridor which is actually an extension of the Miami Tri-Rail commuter trains northward to Stuart over the Florida East Coasts tracks. Sunrail in Orlando is under construction but again this is only a 60 mile commuter train line. Tampa and Jacksonville both have commuter rail studies in the works and it's likely that at least 2 of the Jacksonville routes will happen... eventually.

The Florida East Coast Industries - ALL ABOARD FLORIDA is a completely private buildout of a small part of the old HSR plan. They are closing the gap between Orlando and Cocoa Beach. This trains will be intrastate and NOT offer interline ticketing or through cars to and from Amtrak. At least not for now. The reasons are that interstate passengers and through ticketing as well as through car agreements would involve a whole new stack of government hurdles and regulations, a great deal of expense and a long, long time.

Expect All Aboard Florida to start running their trains to and from Miami and Orlando via Cocoa Beach, once the service is up and running, expect a train or two or three to start serving the Jacksonville Market on a Jacksonville-Daytona Beach-Cocoa Beach-West Palm-Ft.Lauderdale-Miami route. If and when Amtrak comes to the same tracks, they'll operate out of the same stations as separate carriers just as Delta and American both operate out of JIA. I do expect to see All Aboard Florida in Jacksonville before they go to Tampa. Tampa is an expansion that might or might not happen.

Thanks Ock, now I got it.  And if FEC can really turn a profit, well that says a lot for Amtrak who says they cannot.  Hopefully it does happen, I have been in NYC on business a lot lately and I must say, the MetroNorth Rail and LIRR are amazing.  Plus rail into New Jersey to see extended family, certainly a better way to travel.  Thanks for the clarification.

I don't think their ability to turn a profit will say anything about Amtrak.  FEC already owns and operates freight service on 200 of the proposed 240 mile rail service.  In addition, the company owns thousands of acres adjacent to the line and potential stations for real estate development opportunities.  Furthermore, the 40 mile connection to Orlando provides the company with the opportunity to establish freight service in Florida's 3rd largest metropolitan area.  Imo, what makes this a money maker is the potential revenue generated through real estate development and expanded freight rail opportunities.  Both of these are options not available to Amtrak.

These plans just keep getting better and better.  Any hunches as to who will be the next leg connected, Jax or Tampa?

Seems like Jax is the simplest connection, assuming we get the multimodal facility up and running.
